BACKGROUND

Simcoe Hall Settlement House was established in 1935 by the Women’s Welfare League, in response to human and health conditions created by the Great Depression of the 1930’s. Over the 85-year history of Simcoe Hall, this non-profit organization has helped tens of thousands of at-risk individuals, living, and working in our community.

Simcoe Hall currently offers the following:
·       A ministry-funded After-School program that provides a safe place for almost 50 children and youth ages 7-13 to participate in active play, receive homework support, and allow access to proper nutrition.  Daily, each child receives a snack and dinner.
·       A Food Bank, one of the largest in Durham Region, addressing the challenge of food security by providing non-perishables and fresh produce to over three thousand individuals a month.  
·       A Senior Program called the Sassy Seniors Club for adults 55 +.  The weekly program offers a variety of activities including bingo, as well as snacks, coffee, and a hot lunch prepared by our cook.  The program gives those attend the opportunity to socialize, spend time with their friends and stay connected. 
·       Seasonal programs such as: New backpacks full of supplies are made available to children, youth, and teens starting school; Provision of food hampers to close to one thousand families and toys to children at Christmas.

Our vision is to be part of a community that will allow children, individuals, and families to experience and lead healthy, meaningful, and socially responsible lives.

SUMMARY

Simcoe Hall is searching for an enthusiastic, driven individual with financial experience to join our volunteer Board of Directors. The Director will have oversight responsibilities for the maintenance of the agency’s financial records following legislation and GAP. This individual will work directly with the board, Executive Director, bookkeeper, and the agency’s auditor. The range of the agency’s operating budget is $800,000 - $1,000,000.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·       Ensure that effective financial measures, procedures, and controls are in place that are appropriate for the agency to comply and adhere to all regulatory requirements for non-profit organizations.
·      Participate in the development of a draft annual budget and present to the board for approval.
·       Present monthly financial statements to the Board for approval.
·       Monitor the monthly reporting and projected financial statements and advise board of financial related issues.
·       Coordinate with agency’s Auditors regarding preparation of the audited financial statements. Provide oversight to address auditors’ concerns, identify issues and deficiencies.
·       Interact with Executive Director and Bookkeeper regarding monthly financial statements, annual budget, and auditors’ reports.
·       On-going monitoring of financial Policies and Procedures and review with the Board.
·       Serve as a co-signer of cheques with at least one other signing Officer.

The desired candidate will have one or more of the following: 
·       Financial/accounting designation CPA, CA. 
·       Experience as a Treasurer, Controller, Director of Finance is an asset. 
·       Ability to understand the business implications of decision, requiring an awareness of issues, processes and outcomes impacting the agency’s financial position. 
·       Strong and proven financial and business acumen. 
·       Experience in the kind and level of financial information needed by directors to support planning and decision-making. 
 
Skills and competencies 
·       Solid written, verbal, and listening communication skills with the ability to present to small groups. 
·       Previous Board experience, preferably not-for-profit would be an asset. 
·       Specific skills in governance, strategic planning, fundraising, internal policy development
Commitment Length Long Term - 2 years
Minimum Hours 4 / Month
Dates and Times Tuesday: Evening (3rd Tuesday of the month) 
 
TIME COMMITMENT 
 
·       The position would require approx. 3 hrs per month for the monthly financial review including discussion with the bookkeeper.  In addition, the monthly meeting requirement of 2hrs with 2-3 hrs prep time.  Total 4-7 hrs.
